Alpha 5 is now out!

Here is Alpha 5 of Blacktrace! I got some feedback on the user experience of the game, so I started working on that first. Hopefully this makes the game less frustrating for new players. After that I worked on improving performance. While the game runs smoothly on most hardware, there are still some hiccups when a lot of explosions and bullets are in the scene. To resolve this I made the dismemberment and bullet wound system work on one job at a time. This makes bullet wounds show up later then expected, but in all the chaos this is hardly noticeable.

Changes :

  • Intro can be skipped after it's been shown once by pressing spacebar.
  • Enemies flee the scene when they see a dead ally instead of telepathically knowing something is wrong.
  • Added controls explanation to the lock picking screen.
  • The map now shows the enemy paths as well while playing.
  • Enemies can be shot off their bike when they try to flee, and you will still win.
  • Increased shotgun spread and bullet count from 10 to 15.
  • Removed automatically go out of cover when aiming too far from the wall.
  • Increased the damage of the punch and knife slash.
  • Added questionmark to bulletinboard to show explanation again.
  • Reworked the bullet and bullet tracer system for better performance.
  • Reworked dismemberment and bullet wound system for better performance.
  • A lot more smaller fixes.

The update was pretty good! The only problem I encountered was in the second level when it took me too long to open the door, by that point the thieves had already escaped and I failed the mission. But I couldn't get out of the lockpicking screen even when pressing the Q key, and since it overlapped the small menu with the "Retry" option I wasn't able to get out of it, so I had to press Alt+F4. Not sure if there's something I missed to get out of the lockpicking screen, but I did try a second time and the error persisted..

Thank you for the bug report. I was able to recreate it, and a fix will be included in the next update!
